Watercolor in Detail...
I love the challenge of painting with watercolors! Although I also work in acrylic and pencil, watercolors are my preferred medium. Painting allows me to take the chaos of the world and to slow it down. To focus on my subject matter and create how I see the subject using pigment and water is my personal form of meditation. Painting layer upon layer of watercolor glazes gives me the depth and light I see in my subject matter and enables me to share that vision with my audience.
My choice of subject matter gravitates towards animal portraits which has become a specialty of mine, but I also like to paint still life, landscapes, florals, and children.
I received a B.S. in Studio Art with a minor in Education from Radford University in 1982. Shortly after graduation, I began teaching art at Hillsville Intermediate in Carroll County, VA and years later in Bedford County Public Schools where I worked with elementary age children. My career has also included designing art for a silk screening company, as well as selling art supplies for various retailers.
From 2008 until 2016, I worked in a studio in Artists on Depot in The Electric Company in Bedford, VA. I was also a founding member and helped to manage The Electric Company Artist's Co-op from 2012 until 2016. Currently, my studio space is located on the third floor of The Bower Center for the Arts which is also located in Bedford.
I am a member of the Virginia Watercolor Society and have exhibited and won awards in state, local and juried art shows. Commissioned work is always welcome!
